Here is my insider information from Saturday.

My brother and I went to the signing on Peters Parking deck before the game. Brian Oliver was there, he was sitting with Lawal, Storrs, Shumpert, etc.. We called him by his name and asked the players if he could sign too. The whole team started giving him grief and raggin on him "look at that, you a super star already"? He was smilin, he was suprised we knew him. While I was standing there in my #1 football jersey. Shumpert started giving me grief about "you got the wrong jersey on" (his number is #1) I said I will get one the first game you start, he laughed and said "go ahead and buy it then" the rest of the team laughed too.

We talked with Bell, and he was being quiet just signing away, I told him I hope you get better soon and that his defense was huge. He perked up smiled and said he appreciated it, we asked and he said he would get his medical redshirt and be back after a year. Clinch was also excited about the season. And Peacock could be a D-1 tightend, that guy is huge and he talked to us alot.

Jeremis Smith walked up with a poster and was messing with Peacock and Clinch while we were standing there, that guy was acting a goof and was funny as hell. We got his autograph too, he is rehabbing his knees and has spent some time over in Paris playing ball. He said "its awesome".

On our way out, to our suprise, we ran into Charlton Young. And that guy is extremely approachable and loved getting some love for the job he is doing. We told him he was doing a great job recruiting. And then my brother just started in on him with the recruiting questions, and he just laid it out there. He asked "so you gonna get Favors?" his response "we have a real good shot, I have been working on him since 8th grade, I haven't got much sleep in the past 3 months, but we have a REAL good shot". He then said you gotta watch out for Lawal and Peacock this year, they are gonna be the truth. We asked about the idea of moving Lawal to center and letting Favors play powerforwad he just smiled and said "we will have to see"............That guy was nice as could be, we got his autograph too, he shook our hands twice, the whole thing was pretty cool.

Then during the game (the basketball recruits seem to sit in the bottom of our section) and Brian Oliver walked by with someone, maybe his dad. We said "Brian Oliver, when we going to get your autograph". He laughed, and the gentlemen with him looked shocked and was just grinning ear to ear. I think he got a great impression of Tech fans. On his way out he pointed over at us and smiled. It was a great day for my brother and I, even though we lost the football game. It was cool to meet Hewitt, Young, Lawal, Storrs, Miller, Oliver, Peacock, etc we got us some memorabilia (a basketball and a poster) and had a great time.........ain't college basketball the sh*t.

Thought I would just toss in a response due to the lack of interest. Good stuff. Here's hoping the team puts together a big year.

The interest will increase if football loses another conference game and is eliminated from the division race.

We'll see, VaGT, most Tech sports fans have their heart first with football, unless basketball is exciting -- which it has not been for about 3 years now.

Football will always be #1 at Tech but there is plenty of support there for BB if we put a good product on the floor. No one wants to be constantly rebuilding and mediocre - street ball and no D sorta condem us to that result however.

I am just thankful I was in school during the run to the final four. it made for a great spring semester. too bad we didn't win it all that year, it would have been great for our program, of course having another successful year after that would have been great too.

It's the oddest thing because in my mind the title game team was the greatest Tech team ever (better than any of the Cremins teams, which is saying a lot). Yet, since then, the program as VaGT put it, is constantly rebuilding with soft, half-a#@ defense and half-baked offense. It's a huge falloff in my mind.

And Hewitt is responsible for us having a rookie point guard for three straight years.

If we don't make the dance this year with a much softer schedule and a 2nd-year point guard (the excuses Hewitt has used for a losing record last year), what will be the excuses for this year?

Don't know that he is to blame every year for starting a freshmen point guard, losing some great players to the NBA or other crap (injuries transfers), but it is disappointing that he hasn't been able to build up any successors. Why didn't he have a good understudy for when Jack left? why not try and bring in someone to redshirt while Crittenton played point? I really like the coach, and think he can recruit well. I think it is tough profession and even more so in the ACC because expectations are high and at Tech where the fan base gets really impatient really quick. He proved he had could get the team together, then it was almost like he changed his strategy to a high risk high reward recruiting which has turned into high risk with out any payoff so far. We have gotten in great recruits in his years here but it doesn't do well for the program to continually get 1 and dones. Coach needs to find another BJ Elder, Marvin Lewis, Mario West etc. if he wants to keep his job he needs stars that stay for longer than a year.
