Went down to the Tech hoops media day and listened to Coach Hewitt speak and had the chance to interview all the players present.  This team is upbeat and appears very tight off the court.

All the players were personable and very good interviews.  The players who attended were: Alade Aminu, Mo Miller, Zack Peacock, Deandre Bell, Lewis Clinch and Gani Lawal.

Some Quick Observations and Thoughts:
  • Team will be quicker and better ballhandlers than last year's team so the players indicated they would be looking to fastbreak more.

  • Coach Hewitt and all the players are excited about having a returning point guard for a change (Mo Miller) and the leadership and ballhandling skills that are needed to win in the ACC.

  • Coach Hewitt thinks last year's team performed at the level it should have based on the talent but that was obscured by the schedule which was the 2nd toughest in the country.  Thinks this year's schedule will allow the team to develop early in the year.

  • Team has been getting up at 6 AM and running on the track so they feel they are in great shape.

  • Shumpert will back up Mo Miller at the point but they will also play some together.  Miller really likes the kid and has taken him under his wing.

  • Deandre Bell may still play some at the point altho wing is his natural position.  Deandre indicated that he looks to be more aggressive offensively this year.

  • Zack Peacock may play some at the 3 spot when they go to their big lineup.

Have a ton more to post and will post more this weekend including clips from some of the interviews.  Look forward to talking a lot of hoops this year.

Great stuff Double B - thanks for posting.

I listened to Hewitt's presser on my iTunes, and he mentioned that Moe Miller had a dislocated finger and would miss the first 4-5 practices. That leads me to believe that the dislocation occurred a few weeks ago and he is about to return from it. Is this the case, or did the injury happen more recently?

I also heard some of your questions. Good job and thanks for your interest in the b-ball program.

I think we are going to surprise this year. Nothing earth-shatterting, but a very respectable year setting up for a big '09-'10. I think we're an NCAA team if we can stay healthy and have a good committee effort on the glass.

Go Jackets!

IF IF IF we assume Mo does ok at point then Clinch is the key on OFF where we are weak overall.IF Clinch can be a dependable scorer(esp outside) then we may be ok.
If not, very doubtful we will be consistent enuff on ANYTHING except turnovers.

You're welcome.  If you haven't heard, Mo dislocated it a few weeks ago.

Some of the media that was at the press conference commented that they were still in football mode and hadn't had the chance to bone up on hoops yet.  Seems like the season starts earlier every year.  I look forward to the exhibition game on November 7.

Looking at the talent available there's good players but no superstar type talent.  They will have to play together and work hard to have a successful season.  Next year is when the stars arrive.

I heavily defended Hewitt a couple of years ago when people attacked him because I believed so much in him. The last two years have put a big hit on my faith in him and especially because of these "tough schedule, rookie point guard" comments. Half of what Hewitt says now rings as excuses for sub-.500 seasons. What will be this year's excuse or will he use more demanding/high expectation language this year.

What disturbs me the most is a lack of development on defense (very soft, never have pressure on the perimeter, since Keener left). And yet I read a quote from Hewitt that the defense was strong last year (except on turnovers). That is not the same game I saw.

Big difference in my support/faith in coaches depends on their straightforwardness. Paul Johnson -- straight up -- he sees something that stinks, he says it stinks.

Hewitt and Gailey -- dance around with excusing comments for poor play. It gets real old and makes me more critical of their programs.

Sorry, had to vent -- it's driving me nuts!

My biggest argument against Hewitt re: his excuse about returning PG's would be in 04-05 the year after the NC run when we returned everyone just about and most notably Jack. We barely won 20 games in the regular season and what did we finish in conference? 8-8 or 9-7? Either way big disappointment with the players and experience we had coming back. So when he says this is the first year we've had a returning PG since Jack in 04, I want to say, "Hey, that was a huge letdown year too all things considered."

I understand your point, Seabreeze, but I would die for a 20-win letdown year right now. This program can't make the dance in its current state. In my opinion, this team has to make huge growth this year to make the dance, especially in defensive intensity.

what has me so confused is why do we lack that intensity? Hewitt, it seemed to me at least, was all he really cared about. If you played good D you would get in the game. Maybe it isn't that way anymore? did he lose good assistant coaches in the past years?

Oh hell yeah I'd die for a 20 win season this year. But circumstances were different in 05. I really felt we should have done no worse than Top 3 in conference and sweet 16.

We need a defensive whiz. Keener filled that role til he moved to JMU.
