My main gripe with Hewitt's philosophy is on a very similar level I disagreed with Gailey's methods of coaching...

Chan:

He would teach / coach our quarterbacks how to NOT throw interceptions. You're supposed to teach them to make plays in an offense. Without question, college quarterbacks are gonna make mistakes. You HAVE to coach them up to make plays ... NOT just to AVOID making mistakes.

A good analogy would be inside the mind of a professional golfer's caddy. A good caddy would NEVER tell his guy to NOT hit it in the water or hazard on any particular shot. You have to tell your guy where, EXACTLY where...to play the ball.

The man was so obsessed with not making mistakes, that he effectively never taught RB how to make plays. Do you think The Fridge sat around worrying about the mistakes Joe Ham could potentially make? Hell no! He let him make mistakes in 1997 and let him grow from it on his own.

Hewitt:

"Hotel Hewitt" aka the "Revolving Door" of subs he uses is something I also disagree with. In the game of football, you always hear quarterbacks and WR's alike say..."Its good to know what he's thinking in certain situations...". Its common football player speak. THIS comes from cohesion and repetition. Bonding among players.

Our players OTOH, do not have that luxury...

1. Can you tell me who in the hell is our point guard?

I sure can't. Is it Shumpert? A bonafied 2 guard? Is it the freshman, Udofia? Or our back-up Miller? Its got to be trying mentally on our players after busting your hump up and down the court during ACC play and trying to remember who the hell to inbound the ball to.

I was expecting Udofia to be that guy. Clearly he hasn't stepped up as expected but "Hotel Hewitt" has not really given him the opportunity to establish his role at the PG position.

Just 1 month ago, Udofia was among the Top 3 scorers on our team. Now? He's seemingly non-existent. Why? Because Hewitt coaches like a child.

2. Why does Coach Hewitt coach scared?

a. He's too scared to let a true PG take over: Either make Shumpert the PG or let Udofia get his feet wet. He has not allowed Udofia to learn...why?....because of the whole daggum "Hotel Hewit" "Revolving Door"! A player cannot develop in this type of atmosphere. ZERO COHESION!

b. Tell me the last time Favors or Lawal fouled out of a game? Please. For the love of God...TELL ME!!! Let them foul out, coach! Do not let them play scared!!!

THIS is the definition of a cardinal sin. Tell them to play tough. If they foul out, then they foul the F* out!

You cannot win with your best NBA players on the bench. You just can't.

3. Perimeter Defense

Its almost comical how we leave white guys open for three on the perimeter. Ever heard of a 3-2 zone defense? Tonight, whenever we'd pressure the perimeter and forced them to drive, OUTSTANDING things would happen! Not every time, of course, but a very high percentage of the time it would!

You cannot let a team loaded with 3 point shooters get hot from the outside! Go to a 3-2 zone or simply demand
a high pressure man-to-man on the perimeter and allow our big guys to do their job...if necessary.

4. Bottom Line

Hewitt vs. Cremins

A lot of you may be too young to remember but Coach Cremins was considered a crappy X's and O's guy (just like Hewitt is) but one helluva recruiter (JUST LIKE HEWITT); however, he only played 7...SEVEN guys at the most. He let them develop on the court = COHESION.

This CANNOT happen under our current coach (with the exception being VERY...VERY late in the season). It is still possible for us to make a late season run, but to learn what your other 10-11 teammates are thinking on the hardwood while you're trying to make plays is much tougher than KNOWING what a selected few will do in certain situations.

The "Revolving Door" must end. I'm not even frustrated anymore. I'm clairvoyant to the situation. This methodology Hewitt has going is not the answer for long-term success.

Very good insight.  I completely agree with your analysis.
