Agree. Especially a waste when we call one because we have exactly one guy moving when we're trying to get the ball inbounds from stopped play. Happened in both halves.

But today our guys looked good except for a few mental mistakes during the game. We look like a team that deserves to be in the tournament and the top tier of the ACC.

Still too many turnovers though. :X

I hope our young backcourt does a lot of growing. I really like the way Rice is playing even though he made a couple of mistakes at the end. Shumpert looks good and I hope Udofia is as good as he looked earlier in the season.

As usual, I don't think you can lay blame on one person. Today it was a little bit coaching, and a little bit on the players (freshman mistakes, poor free throw shooting, etc).

<Disclaimer: I am no longer a Hewitt fan as a HC. He lost me after the UGA debacle this year, and I'm hoping we can reach the NCAAT on talent, alone.>

But the players HAVE to make FTs. Hewitt cannot shoot FTs for them. Bottom line, we're up 1 with less than 30 seconds left and have our best FT shooter at the line for a 1-and-1. That is not on Hewitt. The players have to execute. Peacock did it the last two games, but came up short in Tally. We missed ours'. They made theirs'. Ball game.

I knew when the TO was called with 10 seconds left it was over. I cannot remember the last time CPH drew up a game-winning play in the huddle in the final seconds of a game. We were lucky against Clemson that we got bailed out with a reach-in on Peacock. Otherwise, we looked like we had no plan.

50% FT shooting in a game IS on the coach.

Agree to disagree. That is a stat that is SQUARELY on the players. It's not an offensive or defensive set drawn up by the coaching staff. It's a 15-foot, unguarded freebie - there is no way you can argue against that. I would surmise they probably shoot thousands per week in practice. They have to make them in the game...end of story.

It is a maddening trend, no doubt. I'm not happy about it.

The players have to make FTs, period. Hewitt has his warts, but this is one I don't pin on him.

They have all proven they are capable of making them. I think even Gani hit something like 15-18 in a game earlier in the season. Peacock is the best FT shooter on the team and just hit the game-winners over Clemson last week. He missed Sunday, and I didn't see Hewitt standing in the paint waving his arms trying to distract Peacock while he was shooting. That's on the shooter.

I'll bet they do not shoot thousands per week. But I'll bet they do practice alley-oops and running chest bumps.

Maybe not thousands. At least hundreds, I'm sure. Either way, a lot.

The players definitely need some help with technique, but I agree it is on the individual player to become a better free throw shooter. How many really good coaches have Wilt Chamberlain, Ben Wallace, and Shaquille O'Neal played for?

I saw a great interview with Bobby Knight and Coach K during halftime of the UNC/NCSU game where they were asked about the difference in players now from the past. They both railed on the fact that players today don't have any concept of team play or desire to improve as team players. Dropping down to help a teammate on defense when they've been beat, making a great pass, etc. are the things today's players don't care about. I'd lump free throw shooting in there too. It's not sexy, spectacular, ESPN highlight stuff, it's just one of those things that helps your TEAM win. Most players care more about the highlights than the wins.
