To account for our offense's outstanding time of possession, I decided to look at how we ranked nationally in Total Defense/opponent's time of possession. We gave up about 13.8 yrds/minute. That ranks 95th nationally, or better than only the following teams:

Bowling Green
Toledo
New Mexico State
Nevada
North Texas
Western Michigan
Notre Dame
Texas A&M
Tulane
San Jose State
Stanford
UTEP
Eastern Michigan
UAB
Utah State
Rice
Fresno State
Idaho
Florida International
Florida State
Memphis
UNLV
Washington State
Western Kentucky
Florida Atlantic

TCU, Texas, and Florida were the top 3 giving up about 8.5 yrds/minute

Anyone else notice that Notre Dame was even worse? Those of you calling for Tenuta to be back may want to reconsider. Where's UVA on the list?

There was no doubt about the fact our defense was VERY bad. It seemed that during some games, we were allowing double digit yardage on first down plays. I am holding out a little hope that with some new player additions, a new DC, and a new system, the defense might be able to make a few more stops next year, but I realize that it will probably still be a major "work in progress". As CPJ basically used his offensive system to make the offense run without a great O-line, I am hoping that CAG can do a similar magic act with the defense.

UVA was 29th...NCST (in case we get McCollum) was 56th. Not great, but a hell of a lot better than 95th.

Rankings of BCS teams:
1 TCU
2 Texas
3 Florida
7 Ohio State
8 Bama
9 Iowa
12 Oregon
17 Boise
28 Cincy
95 GT

Only those in the top 10 had any shot at the NC, and Cincy was clearly outmatched by UF.

Yuck, that's terrible. Hope Groh can work some magic next year, but I'll understand if it takes a couple of years. The main thing I'll be looking for it clear progress.

It's just amazing that we even ended up in a BCS game or even had as great of a season as we had.  I was going to try and do a similar breakdown (just normalize stats wrt TOP), but your breakdown is much better.

Yeah... it shows how awful our D was last year, and how good our O was.  We really can't do much worse.. even if it takes a year to get back on track, it'll be worth it.

The list above speaks volumes.

For those that think all we have to do is improve our DEF from 95 to 70 and we'll be BCS easy , dream on.Our Off will NOT score nor control ball like we did last yr.(again ,what happens if Nesbitt goes down)

Nice analysis!  Loved CPJ's response to a question in post recruiting press conference.  To this effect "any particular reason you recruited so many on the defensive side of the ball?"  CPJ "Didn't you see us play? (several laughs)"

Interested in hearing you reasons as to why?

Personally I think we can.

- The OL will be better IMO, and that is 75% of ball control in any offense. Fewer square pegs, more years of experience in the system.

- Nesbitt will continue to improve.

-Yes Dwyer's gone, but IMO, the guys that we have to replace are better at running in traffic. He never seemed to care for it that much. So, we may lose the 30-50 yard carries, but I think we'll see fewer 1-2 yard gains.

- Thomas IMO is a system WR. Hill is/will be a better pure WR in every sense. His first year of off season training will help him build the muscle mass he lacks.
